The Ancient Greek Cure for Depression and Anxiety


As far as societies go, we’re one stressed out, anxious, depressed and self-medicating mess. Those of us who work on the front-lines in the mental health field know this all too well; others need only to take a careful look around the social-cultural landscape to appreciate that our collective mental health is not too, well, healthy.

Globally, things aren’t much better; according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 450 million people worldwide are directly affected by mental disorders and disabilities and that by 2030 depression will top the list of all other health conditions as the number one financial burden around the world.


Why? Why are we getting more stressed out and more depressed?

Increased rates of depression (not to mention other mental health woes like anxiety and addiction) are a byproduct of our modernized, industrialized and urbanized lives. It seems that our love affair with the gadgets, gizmos and comforts of being a highly technologically evolved society have put us on a never-ending treadmill of overworking, under-sleeping and hyper-stressing as we exhaustedly lunge towards the “American Dream”. Our need for i-Phones, plasma TVs and a bigger house is killing us.

The levels of bright-light exposure-time spent outdoors-have been declining. The average adult gets just over six and a half hours of sleep a night. It used to be nine hours a night. There’s increasing isolation, fragmentation, the erosion of community.

We feel perpetually stressed. And the more we learn about depression neurologically, the more we learn that it represents the brain’s runaway stress response.

So what were these magical lifestyle changes (which have also become known as “Caveman Therapy”)?



They were essentially 6 things:

eating an omega-3 rich diet;

getting regular daily exercise;

getting plenty of natural sunlight;

getting ample sleep every night;

being involved in some type of social activity where social connections were made; and

participation in meaningful tasks that leave little time for negative thoughts-all things that our ancestors had in abundance.

A holistic way of living that had been known in the ancient world as the “Bios Pythagorikos” (the Pythagorean Way of Life) that included

a healthy vegetarian diet,

daily rigorous physical exercise, and

philosophical group discussions (dialectical discussions) that were meant to help a person better understand their universe and their purpose within that universe.

And living ethically was also essential. For the Greeks, act-right/think-right were the keys towards well-being.

Participants in my study who immersed themselves into this more engaged, reflective way of life experienced the following:

meaningfully increased levels of personal as well as transpersonal awareness;

an increased appreciation for life (as well as death);

an increased sense of purpose in their lives; an increased sense of concern for others, as well as

an increased sense of spirituality and self-acceptance.

So if you’re feeling depressed or stressed out, instead of reaching for the medicine cabinet, maybe it’s time to try a very old-school–as in ancient–solution; you might be amazed at how differently you feel and how differently you experience the world.

Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease

Dementia is a difficult disease to deal with, both for the person who has it and for their loved ones. 

There are many types of dementia, some of which include Parkinson’s disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, Huntington’s disease, and Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. But Alzheimer’s disease is by far the most well-known and common form of dementia. Its effects can be devastating. 

There are lifestyle changes you can make to help with Alzheimer’s prevention.

Dementia is a term used to describe the range of conditions that cause a loss of cognitive functioning. As of 2015, there were 48.5 million people living with dementia worldwide, and this number is projected to double every 20 years. In the U.S., Alzheimer’s in particular is the 6th leading cause of death and 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today.

The risk of developing Alzheimer’s doubles every decade after the age of 60. 

Women develop the disease more often than men, which can be partially attributed to the fact that they live longer lives.

Alzheimer’s Symptoms – What To Look Out For

Alzheimer’s is a gradual process; it doesn’t just happen overnight. 

Alzheimer’s involves a decline in cognitive and behavioral function that interferes with your ability to function in day-to-day life. 

Some telltale signs of Alzheimer’s include:

  1. A reduced ability to take in and remember information 
  2. Impaired spatial awareness 
  3. Personality changes 
  4. Impaired reasoning abilities 
  5. Difficulty speaking, writing, and reading 

What Causes Alzheimer’s?

In recent years, Alzheimer’s disease has been dubbed “type 3 diabetes”, because insulin signaling plays an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s. 

Individuals who are insulin resistant, have type 2 diabetes, obesity, or other metabolic diseases have an increased risk for developing a few forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. 

This finding supports the theory that cardiovascular health and brain health are connected, something that professionals have suspected for many years.

Maintaining good blood vessel health through the regulation of LDL (“bad cholesterol”) intake is essential to preventing Alzheimer’s disease. 

Producing too much “bad cholesterol” leads to high blood pressure, which can damage blood vessels in the brain and affect your memory and thinking.

Cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s disease are also both characterized by elevated blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is affected by dietary intakes of vitamins B2, B6, B9 (folic acid), and B12.

Another factor that plays a role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease is genetics. 

If a relative in your immediate family, such as your sibling or parent, has Alzheimer’s, you have an increased risk for developing the disease. 

However, not everyone with a genetic risk develops the disease.

1. Regulate Your Blood Sugar Levels

In one study that followed 5,189 people over a 10-year period, it was found that people with high blood sugar had a faster cognitive decline than their counterparts with normal blood sugar. 

Keep an eye on your blood sugar levels and regulate it through staying hydrated, exercising, and choosing foods with a low glycemic index.

2. Incorporate Healthy Fats Into Your Diet

HDL (“good cholesterol”) plays a beneficial role in blood vessel health, which is the structure that ultimately keeps your brain intact. 

Incorporating more monounsaturated fats, like avocados and olive oil, into your diet can do wonders for your cognitive function. 

In one study that followed the diet of Alzheimer’s patients, it was found that adopting a 70% fat diet for 3 months drastically improved the cognition of these patients. 

3. Exercise More

It’s no secret that exercise has a multitude of benefits, including improving cardiovascular and brain health. 

Cardiovascular exercise elevates your heart rate, which in turn increases blood flow to your brain.

4. Manage Your Stress Levels

Persistent stress can cause chemical imbalances and vascular changes that are damaging to your brain cells. 

Manage your stress by taking time for yourself, accepting what cannot be changed, and seeking out support.

5. Get Adequate Sleep

One case study of 32 patients with dementia found that the less REM sleep (also known as dream-stage sleep) a person has, the higher their risk of dementia. 

Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night in order to keep your brain in tiptop shape.

6. Adopt An Anti Inflammatory Diet

Researchers have found that certain foods and nutrients have the ability to modulate the inflammatory process, which is one factor that contributes to dementia. 

Diets with lower levels of vitamin E, D, B5, B2, calcium, and omega 3 results in lower grey brain matter and worse cognitive functioning capabilities. 

Diets that incorporate more nuts, fish, and omega-3 polyunsaturated acids, on the other hand, have been associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

7. Take Supplements

Take vitamin E, vitamin C, and folic acid (B9) supplements. Folic acid can reduce homocysteine levels while vitamins C and E, when taken together, may reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s by 20%.

New cholesterol guidelines for heart health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

A group of physicians at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the American Heart Association have released updated guidelines on managing cholesterol to minimize the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. The new guidelines advocate for more aggressive treatment with statin therapy and getting LDL cholesterol counts, commonly referred to as “bad cholesterol” to your target level –- in general, less than 100mg/dL; for those with risk factors, less than 70mg/dL.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in blood and cells. It travels in bundles called lipoproteins. Cholesterol itself isn’t bad — the body needs it to make hormones, vitamin D and digestive fluids, and it helps organs function properly. But having too much cholesterol can be a problem.

There are two forms of cholesterol:

– LDL (low-density lipoprotein): “bad,” unhealthy cholesterol. It builds up in arteries forming plaques, which can block the flow of oxygen-carrying blood to major organs including the heart, and has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular events including heart attacks and stroke. LDL levels are influenced by the food you eat, genetics, liver function and other factors.

– HDL (high-density lipoprotein): “good,” healthy cholesterol. It takes extra cholesterol out of arteries and delivers it to the liver, removing it from the body.

How do I know if I need to lower my cholesterol?

There are three tests to talk about with your doctor:

– Non-fasting blood test to measure LDL cholesterol

– Coronary artery calcium score

– Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk Estimator — an equation to calculate the 10-year future risk of a heart attack

Based on these tests, your doctor will decide if you should be on a statin.

What can I do to lower my cholesterol?

Lifestyle changes including exercise, a healthy diet, and quitting smoking can prevent 80 percent of heart disease. Diet has been shown to be vitally important and effective in preventing heart attacks and reducing the risk of subsequent cardiovascular events in those who have already had a heart attack. Plant-based and Mediterranean diets are effective but you must find a diet that works for you. However, lifestyle changes may not be enough; you may need to take a statin to lower your LDL further.

What are statins?

Statins prevent heart attacks by lowering LDL and reducing inflammation, among other mechanisms. They can be used to prevent a heart attack or stroke before it occurs, or prevent a second heart attack or stroke.

What are the side effects of statins?

The risk of serious side effects range from one in 500 to one in 1,000, which is considered very low. Muscle aches are a possible side effect, but are not considered serious. An increase in the dose of statins is not associated with an increase in side effects.

What is the bottom line of the new recommendations?

Talk to your doctor about what LDL level is right for you, and use the highest dose of statin tolerated to get to that target LDL level. And, as always, continue with lifestyle modifications, including exercise, a healthy diet, and quitting smoking.

Panic Attacks And Anxiety Episodes Linked To Vitamin Deficiencies

 

With approximately 40 million adults across the United States experiencing anxiety each year, scientists and researchers have dedicated their careers to trying to better understand this condition. 

Despite this work, we are still somewhat unclear on what actually causes this condition to occur.

Characterized by feelings of nervousness and restlessness, increased heart rate,hyperventilation, sweating, trembling, difficulty concentrating and uncontrolled worry, it has the ability to impact every area of one’s life. 

There are many theories regarding the root cause of the condition, including genetics, brain chemistry, environmental factors or other medical factors and/or disease, however, nothing has been proven definitively. 

Instead, the scientific community continues to explore these leads further in the hope of an answer.

One small study out of Japan may provide an important insight into the connection between nutritional deficiencies and mental health, revealing that 

   “ low levels of vitamin B6 and iron may actually trigger the chemical changes in the brain responsible for panic attacks, hyperventilation and other forms of anxiety.

The research team analyzed the nutritional levels of 21 participants with varying levels of anxiety, panic attacks, and hyperventilation episodes. 

While some experienced minor attacks, manageable at home, others were severe enough to result in emergency room visits. 

They tested these participants for a number of different nutritional deficiencies or abnormalities in the hope of identifying a pattern.

 At the same time, they ran a similar set of tests on a control group of 20 people, comparing the two.

The data showed that those who were experiencing anxiety were found to have lower levels of B6 and Iron than those in the healthy group. 

Why is this important? 

One of the most accepted theories regarding the development of anxiety is that it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, with serotonin seen as a key player. 

This is due to the fact that serotonin is one of the ‘happiness hormones’, responsible for triggering the reward and pleasure centers of the brain.

Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan, and both iron and vitamin B6 play an important role in this process. 

Therefore, an absence of these nutrients can, ultimately cause a decrease of serotonin levels. 

In fact, many of today’s antidepressant drugs work on this same theory, by boosting serotonin levels in order to regulate mental health.

The study’s authors wrote, 

   “These results suggest that low serum concentrations of vitamin B6 and iron are involved in PA (panic attacks) and HVA (hyperventilation).” 

Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms involved in such differences.

VITAMINS YOU SHOULD TAKE

It seems like simple, obvious advice: Eat your vegetables, get some exercise, and take your vitamins.

Decades of research have failed to find any substantial evidence that vitamins and supplements do any significant good. 

In fact, recent studies skew in the opposite direction, having found that certain vitamins may be bad for you

Several have been linked with an increase in certain cancers, for example, while others have been tied to a rise in the risk of kidney stones.

And a large new study out Wednesday suggested that, despite this growing knowledge, Americans’ pill-popping habits have stayed basically the same over the last decade.

Here are the vitamins and supplements you should take — and the ones you should avoid:

For decades, it was assumed that multivitamins were critical to overall health. 

Vitamin C to boost your immune system,

vitamin A to protect your vision, 

vitamin B to keep you energized.

Not only do you already get these ingredients from the food you eat, but studies suggest that consuming them in excess can actually cause harm. 

Vitamin D: Take it — It helps keep your bones strong and it’s hard to get from food.

Vitamin D isn’t present in most of the foods we eat, but it’s a critical ingredient that keeps our bones strong by helping us absorb calcium. 

Getting sunlight helps our bodies produce it as well, but it can be tough to get enough in the winter. 

Several recent study reviews have found that people who took vitamin D supplements daily lived longer, on average, than those who didn’t.

Antioxidants: Skip them — an excess of these has been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, and you can eat berries instead.

Vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidants found in plentiful form in many fruits — especially berries — and veggies, and they’ve been touted for their alleged ability to protect against cancer.

But studies suggest that when taken in excess, antioxidants can actually be harmful

Vitamin C: Skip it — it probably won’t help you get over your cold, and you can eat citrus fruits instead.

The vitamin C hype — which started with a suggestion from chemist Linus Pauling made in the 1970s and has peaked with Airborne and Emergen-C — is just that: hype. 

Study after study has shown that vitamin C does little to nothing to prevent the common cold. 

Plus, megadoses of 2,000 milligrams or more can raise your risk of painful kidney stones.

So get your vitamin C from your food instead. Strawberries are packed with the nutrient.

Vitamin B3: Skip it and eat salmon, tuna, or beets instead.

For years, vitamin B3 was promoted to treat everything from Alzheimer’s to heart disease. 

But recent studies have called for an end to the overprescription of the nutrient.

A large 2014 study of more than 25,000 people with heart disease found that putting people on long-acting doses of vitamin B3 to raise their levels of “good,” or HDL, cholesterol didn’t reduce the incidence of heart attacks, strokes, or deaths.

Plus, people in the study who took the B3 supplements were more likely than those taking a placebo to develop infections, liver problems, and internal bleeding.

Probiotics: Skip them — the science isn’t yet advanced enough to prove they have a significant benefit, and you can eat yogurt instead

Probiotics — pricey bacterial supplements that can cost upward of $1 per pill but are found naturally in smaller amounts in yogurt and other fermented foods — have become a big business, with a market of roughly $23.1 billion in 2012.

The idea behind them is simple: Support the trillions of bacteria blossoming in our gut, which we know play a crucial role in regulating our health.

But putting that idea into actual practice has been a bit more complicated. 

So far, the effects of probiotics have been all over the map. 

Sometimes they help, sometimes they don’t. So rather than shelling out for a pill that promises to be a cure-all, snack on a parfait.

Zinc: Take it — it’s one of the only ingredients linked to shortening a cold.

Unlike vitamin C, which studies have found likely does nothing to prevent or treat the common cold, zinc may actually be worth it. 

The mineral seems to interfere with the replication of rhinoviruses, the bugs that cause the common cold.

In a 2011 review of studies of people who’d recently gotten sick, researchers looked at those who’d started taking zinc and compared them with those who’d just taken a placebo. 

The ones on the zinc had shorter colds and less severe symptoms.

Vitamin E: Skip it — an excess has been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, and you can eat spinach instead.

The antioxidant vitamin E was popularized for its alleged ability to protect against cancer. But a large 2011 study of close to 36,000 men found that the risk of prostate cancer actually increased among the men taking vitamin E compared to the men taking a placebo.

And a 2005 study linked high doses of vitamin E with an overall higher risk of death. 

So if you’re looking for more vitamin E, make yourself a fresh spinach salad and skip the pill. Dark greens like spinach are rich with this stuff.

Folic acid B12: Take it if you’re pregnant or if you might want to get pregnant.

Folic acid is a B vitamin our bodies use to make new cells. 

The National Institutes of Health recommended that women who are currently pregnant or who want to get pregnant take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, because their bodies demand more of this key nutrient when they’re carrying a growing fetus.

Additionally, several large studies have linked folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy with decreased rates of neural-tube defects, serious and life-threatening birth defects of the baby’s brain, spine, or spinal cord.

CALCIUM, VITAMIN D AND FRACTURES

 “Vitamin D and calcium supplements may not lower fracture risk.” 

In 2015, studies showed that Calcium supplements have risks and side effects, and are not likely indicated for most healthy community-dwelling adults over 50. These folks are not in a high-risk category for vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, and fractures, and we usually advise them to get their calcium from food.

Dietary sources of calcium are everywhere, including milk and yogurt, but also include green leafy veggies like collard greens, legumes like black-eyed peas, tofu, almonds, orange juice.

Research found that taking vitamin D supplements did not protect against fractures in people over 50. 

Indeed, the original recommendations for calcium supplementation were based on a study of elderly, nursing-home bound women with vitamin deficiencies and low bone density, for whom calcium and vitamin D supplements did significantly reduce fracture risk.

Advice to healthy patients is still to get calcium from foods, and the best diet for this is a Mediterranean-style diet rich in colorful plants, plenty of legumes, and fish. This plus high-protein, low-fat, and low-sugar dairy (yogurt is ideal) can supply plenty of calcium.

Vitamin D deficiency includes people with eating disorders; people who have had gastric bypass surgeries; those with malabsorption syndromes like celiac sprue; pregnant and lactating women; people who have dark skin; and those who wear total skin covering (and thus absorb less sunlight). In addition, people with or at risk for low bone density (perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, people diagnosed with other skeletal disorders, or who take certain medications), should discuss whether they need supplements and to have blood levels of vitamin D monitored.

Vitamin D supplement of 1,000 IUs daily is advised.

For people who would rather avoid a supplement but may need a boost of vitamin D, it is also found in some common foods, including sardines, salmon, tuna, cheese, egg yolks, and vitamin-fortified milk. 

For “healthy community-dwelling adult” category, a supplement of anywhere from 400 to 2,000 IUs of vitamin D daily is not likely to cause harm.

Yes, vitamin D toxicity is a thing, usually seen at levels above 80 ng/ml, which causes excessive calcium to be released into the bloodstream. 

Other important and effective ways to protect your bones:

There are other methods that may be more effective at maintaining bone health and reducing fracture risk. 

One that we can likely all agree on is regular physical activity. 

Weight-bearing exercise like walking, jogging, tennis, and aerobics definitely strengthens bones. 

Core exercises like yoga and Pilates can improve balance. 

All of this can help reduce falls and fracture risk.

Rcommendations: A mediterranean-style diet rich in colorful plants, plenty of legumes, fish, plus low-sugar, low-fat dairy and plenty of varied physical activity throughout your entire life and maybe calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation for certain people, following a discussion with their doctors.

Rubella outbreak in Japan

There is an outbreak of rubella in Japan.

Travelers to Japan should make sure they are vaccinated against rubella with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine before travel.

Rubella is very dangerous for a pregnant woman and her developing baby. Pregnant women who are not protected against rubella through either vaccination or previous rubella infection should not travel to Japan during this outbreak. 

What is rubella?

Rubella, also called German measles, is a disease spread by the coughs and sneezes of infected people. 

Symptoms include rash and fever for 2–3 days. 

Rubella is very dangerous for a pregnant woman and her developing baby. If a pregnant woman gets rubella virus, her baby could have birth defects such as deafness, cataracts (blurred vision), heart defects, mental disabilities, and organ damage.

What is the current situation?

Health officials in Japan have reported an outbreak of rubella. Most cases continue to be reported in the Kanto region (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama).

What can travelers do to protect themselves?

Make sure you are fully vaccinated or otherwise protected against rubella.

People who cannot show that they were vaccinated or are otherwise protected against rubella should get vaccinated before leaving the United States:

Infants (6–11 months of age) should have 1 dose of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.

Children in the United States routinely receive MMR vaccination at age 12–15 months.

Adults and children 1 year of age or older should have 2 doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days

Avoid contact with people who are sick.

Special Advice for Pregnant Women.

When rubella infection occurs during early pregnancy, serious consequences—such as miscarriages, stillbirths, and severe birth defects in infants congenital rubella syndrome, CRS—can result. 

Pregnant women should talk with their healthcare providers before traveling to Japan to check whether they are protected against rubella and whether it is advisable to travel.

Avoid traveling to Japan during this outbreak if not protected against rubella, through either vaccination or previous rubella infection. 

This is especially important during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Get MMR vaccine after they have given birth, if they are not already protected against rubella.

What can clinicians do?

Check that your patients 6 months of age or older who will be traveling internationally are  protected against rubella.

Think Travel: Keep rubella in mind when treating patients with fever and rash, especially if the patient has recently traveled internationally.
